Take-Home Exam: A Pleasant Torture

Posted on: March 26, 2010

Nearly everyone in our group was experiencing “take-home exam” for the first time in his/her life. In all the ‘previous’ universities we studied before AUA there were no any take-home exams. So we were pleasantly surprised discovering the wonder of this type of exam. We thought of it to be a pleasure and 100% A+, but the exam turned out to be a “torture”.

It was corporate finance exam. Already having the access to the exam materials on Saturday evening we were supposed to handle the exams on Monday evening. As for the Saturday evening everyone was too tired to do anything. But Sunday morning the real chaos began.

The first several hours everyone was trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. Tasks and requirements were clear after having two-three browser windows each one with some 20 tabs in it! I think for the first couple of hours all the buttons in google-finance and yahoo-finance were clear as well. But how can a real MBA student of our group be connected to the internet and not be in Facebook? Impossible! All the information which you somehow was unable to find by yourself was available in FB (as we shortly call it). Risk free rate, free cash flow calculation, WACC, CAPM, etc. were all in the status updates of MBA1. But isn’t that logical? “What is on your mind?” asks you Facebook in the status box. That was all that made our thought for that day.

Some us of managed to finish at midnight – in some 12 hours, some had to sit up till the morning. But the result was that we learned how to manage the task, how to search for the right or at least possible solution for a particular problem. “The pleasant torture” was a real fun to try.

Our finance professor Garegin later stated,”You speak more professional this term and I am really happy for that.”
